אלישע בן אבויה – Elisha ben Abuya, tanna in the 1st century CE at Jerusalem. Though of uncertain scholarly origins, his name is associated with a legend (aggada) of the Orchard, or pardes. According to the legend, Aḥer, ben Azai, ben Zoma and Rabbi Akiva entered the Orchard of Paradise to study its secrets. Ben Azai took one look and died, ben Zoma went mad, Aḥer destroyed plants and Akiva was the only one to re-emerge unscathed.
