The altar, also known as the outer altar, was a large square, stepped structure. The blood of the offerings was sprinkled on the altar and libations of wine and oil were poured over it. Burnt-oferings, the handful from meal-offerings and fat from other sacrifces were burned on the altar. The fire on the altar was constantly burning and efforts were made to ensure that at least one offering was sacrificed there at all times when the Temple service was in progress.
