נזיר – a Nazirite, or one who takes a vow of nezirut. This vow is to refrain from eating or drinking anything derived from the vine, especially wine, to avoid becoming tameh through contact with a corpse, and from cutting one’s hair. Violation of these prohibitions is punished by lashes. The minimum period for this vow is thirty days. The term in modern usage has come to be associated with monks, or those living acetic lives.
