A system introduced by Hillel the Elder that permits a debt to be collected after the turn of the Sabbatical Year as mandated by the shemitat kesafim – the cancellation of debts at the turn of the shemita.

The source for the term prosbol is Greek, although it is not entirely clear what the word refers to. One suggestion is that it means simply “an announcement delivered to the courts.”
