Rabbi Yitzḥak ben Yakov Alfasi HaKohen, b. 1013, d. 1103. Algerian halakhist at Fes (Fez) and later Cordoba. The author of the seminal halakhic work Sefer HaHalakhot (also called the Hilkhot HaRif), a Talmud summary of sorts, progressing through the order of discussions in the Talmud but excluding anything that does not touch upon the actual halakha. The Hilkhot HaRif is considered to be one of the “Three Pillars” of halakha, and even came to be known as the Talmud Katan, or “Lesser Talmud”.
